What information does Lewiston Adult Education collect and how is it used?

A. Personally-Identifiable Information: Lewiston Adult Education typically receives specific data about its website visitors only when such information is provided voluntarily, such as when our visitors request information, purchase or enroll for services, provide resume information for employment opportunities, or send us e-mail. Of course, some of these activities require that you give us information, such as when you make a purchase, use a credit card to pay for services, submit your resume, or request certain types of information. When you provide personally-identifiable information to Lewiston Adult Education through one of our websites, it will be used to fulfill your specific request. You may also request that Lewiston Adult Education not use your information by sending an e-mail to adulted@lewistonadulted.org, however, Lewiston Adult Education reserves the right, in its discretion, to send you bulletins and other important information about your Lewiston Adult Education services. Absent any instructions from you, Lewiston Adult Education may use information you provide to inform you about additional services and products offered by the Lewiston Adult Education family of companies, Lewiston Adult Education authorized agents, and other goods and services providers with whom Lewiston Adult Education has relationships and whose offerings might be of interest to you. Lewiston Adult Education will not, however, sell or trade your personally-identifiable information unless we are authorized or legally required to do so, or in the case of imminent physical harm to the visitor or others. On those LAE sites where you may provide LAE with credit card or other ordering information via the web, LAE protects and secures this information by employing commercially customary web-based security and encryption protocols, examples of which include Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and Secure Electronic Transaction (SET). On those sites where you voluntarily offer any feedback, data, answers, questions, comments, suggestions, referrals, ideas or the like, LAE will treat that portion of the information as non-confidential and non-proprietary and, except as otherwise expressed in this privacy statement, LAE assumes no obligation to protect such information from disclosure.

B. Non Personally-Identifiable (Generic) Information: In general, Lewiston Adult Education gathers some generic information automatically. Generic information does NOT reveal the identity of the visitor. It usually includes information about the Internet address assigned to your computer, the number and frequency of visitors, and the Lewiston Adult Education sites visited. Lewiston Adult Education gathers this information for the limited purpose of determining customer service and website needs. We accomplish this by using certain technologies, including "cookies" (a technology that can be used to provide the visitor with tailored information about Lewiston Adult Education services). Lewiston Adult Education does not combine information collected in this way with any personally-identifiable information. You can set your browser to notify you when you receive a cookie and you can refuse it.

C. Your Lewiston Adult Education-Hosted Website, Bulletin Boards, Chat Rooms and Third-Party Sites: Information that you disclose in a public space, including on any bulletin board, chat room, or website Lewiston Adult Education may host for you as part of your Lewiston Adult Education services, is available to anyone else who visits that space. Lewiston Adult Education cannot safeguard any information you disclose in these locations. Additionally, Lewiston Adult Education websites contain links to sites that belong to third parties unrelated to Lewiston Adult Education. Lewiston Adult Education cannot protect any information you may disclose in these sites and recommends that you review the privacy policy statements of those sites you visit.

D. Exceptions and Limitations: Notwithstanding the foregoing and in compliance with applicable laws, Lewiston Adult Education (i) cooperates fully with state, local, and federal officials in any investigation relating to any content (including personal or private electronic communications transmitted to Lewiston Adult Education) or purported unlawful activities of any user of the Service, and (ii) takes reasonable measures to protect its proprietary rights. This year, Lewiston Adult Education will be celebrating 130 years of service to the lifelong learners of Lewiston!

The Adult Education program in Lewiston, or “Evening School” as it was originally called, got its start educating the factory employees who had left school at a young age to work. By the 1870’s-1880’s, there was an increasing need for both the adults who had left school at a young age, as well as the teens who had just started working in the factories, to complete their education. After a few false starts and volunteer-led tutoring programs, the Lewiston School Department elected to open their own Evening School in 1884. Students who had recently left day school to work in factories, as well as older adults, were welcome.

To celebrate the occasion, we thought we would offer a few special classes featuring different aspects of our local history. And to thank our lifelong learners, we'd like to invite any student who purchases a regular class this winter to join any one of our "Local History" courses- with the registration fee on us!

In other words, buy ANY Lewiston Adult Education course this semester, and we will waive the registration fee for a Local History course! You will still need to pre-register for the Local History class, as space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All registrants will be responsible for any applicable lab fees. To take advantage of this offer, you must make your registration by phone (795-4141), by mail, or in person at 156 East Ave.

Local History classes include:

A Grand Trip Through Lewiston's History

Lewiston-Auburn’s Little Grand Trunk Railroad

Museum L-A Tour

Step Back in Time: Local History and Genealogy

Walking Tour of Lewiston’s Mill District

Many thanks to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission for the use of the stereoview image that appears on our cover, “Downtown Lewiston as seen from atop Mt. David Davis.” Thanks also to the Bates College Muskie Archives for their assistance in researching the Lewiston School Department’s "1884 Annual Report," which details the initial funding of the first formal Evening School sponsored by the Lewiston School Department.
