This year, Lewiston Adult Education will be celebrating 130 years of service to the lifelong learners of Lewiston!

The Adult Education program in Lewiston, or “Evening School” as it was originally called, got its start educating the factory employees who had left school at a young age to work. By the 1870’s-1880’s, there was an increasing need for both the adults who had left school at a young age, as well as the teens who had just started working in the factories, to complete their education. After a few false starts and volunteer-led tutoring programs, the Lewiston School Department elected to open their own Evening School in 1884. Students who had recently left day school to work in factories, as well as older adults, were welcome.

To celebrate the occasion, we thought we would offer a few special classes featuring different aspects of our local history. And to thank our lifelong learners, we'd like to invite any student who purchases a regular class this winter to join any one of our "Local History" courses- with the registration fee on us!

In other words, buy ANY Lewiston Adult Education course this semester, and we will waive the registration fee for a Local History course! You will still need to pre-register for the Local History class, as space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. All registrants will be responsible for any applicable lab fees. To take advantage of this offer, you must make your registration by phone (795-4141), by mail, or in person at 156 East Ave.

Local History classes include:

A Grand Trip Through Lewiston's History

Lewiston-Auburn’s Little Grand Trunk Railroad

Museum L-A Tour

Step Back in Time: Local History and Genealogy

Walking Tour of Lewiston’s Mill District

Many thanks to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission for the use of the stereoview image that appears on our cover, “Downtown Lewiston as seen from atop Mt. David Davis.” Thanks also to the Bates College Muskie Archives for their assistance in researching the Lewiston School Department’s "1884 Annual Report," which details the initial funding of the first formal Evening School sponsored by the Lewiston School Department.
